Two decades after they released their last batch of new material, the funk outfit ConFunkShun are back with their latest single ‘I Miss You’ taken from their forthcoming release More Then Love which is released on 28th April. Best known for their driving funky beats released during the seventies and eighties, this new single release is a mid-tempo romantic groove.

It should be noted that this is a reconfigured line-up of ConFunkShun, with sole original member Michael Cooper – guitarist and vocalist – present in the current configuration. That said, this new single is a nice new release marking the return of the band on record; the group under Cooper’s leadership continue to tour Stateside to much acclaim.

The song, available to listen to below, tells the story of a chap who told his lady friend that, well, he wanted some space between them. Now, on reflection, said chap realises that this was a moronic thing to tell her, and that he misses her, and in the words of the Jackson 5, wants her back. ‘I Miss You’ is a nice neo-soul groove (which features – to my delight – real horns!) that is pleasant on the ear, combining a catchy lyric with a good vocal arrangement. It remains to be seen what the rest of the album is like – will it be ballad heavy, or will they bring the funk – but this single gives us anticipation for their new release, and regardless of the changing line-up (let’s face it really only The Whispers can claim the moral high-ground about changing line-ups) it’s a good release, one that should excite soul music fans.
