A late contender for soul song of the year is ‘It Wasn’t Me’, the debut single by British artist Alex Parvenu. The song, released last week, is taken off Alex’s upcoming EP release Blue Summer, which is due for release next year.
‘It Wasn’t Me’ is a bouncy, Motown-esque number featuring witty lyrics on the father-boyfriend relationship. It’s a clever song, showcasing Alex’s talent as a lyricist. It’s unashamedly retro, but nonetheless feels fresh and contemporary, and features some great horns. Alex wrote and produce the song himself, and even directed the animated music video himself.
Alex’s musical inspirations run through ‘It Wasn’t Me’ clearly. He grew up in London in a musical household filled with the sounds of the greats like The Temptations, Donny Hathaway and Marvin Gaye. He sang in a gospel choir, and has been writing songs since he was just 11.
Today, Alex is putting the finishing touches on his debut EP. If the next year is looking gloomy for the rest of Britain, Alex’s 2019 is set to be a promising one.
